Figshare
Overview
Figshare is a general-purpose open research repository that accepts any file type, including datasets, figures, preprints, presentations, code, and media, assigning a DOI to each item at the point of publication. Founded in 2011 by Mark Hahnel and supported by Digital Science, a Springer Nature subsidiary, since its 2012 relaunch, it operates a free public tier alongside institutional and publisher deployments. Figshare integrates with ORCID and supports CC0 and CC BY licensing, placing it alongside Zenodo and Dryad as one of the primary generalist repositories recommended for FAIR-compliant research data sharing. It is widely used as a supplementary data host by major publishers and as an institutional repository platform by universities.
