BIDS Steering Group

Overview

The BIDS Steering Group is the independent community governance body for the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) specification, established in October 2019 as the community of contributors and volume of BEP (BIDS Extension Proposal) activity had grown to a scale that required formalised oversight. Prior to its formation, specification changes were managed informally by the original working group convened by INCF. The Steering Group was created to provide structured decision-making, ratify accepted BEPs, and set long-term strategic direction. It comprises five elected members from the BIDS community and operates under an open contributor model in which anyone can propose new extensions via the BEP process. INCF formally endorses BIDS and lists it in the Standards and Best Practices portfolio, but governance of the specification rests entirely with the Steering Group.
