Analytics

openneuroscience.org uses self-hosted Matomo analytics for audience measurement. Matomo is installed on a server operated by the site maintainer. No data is sent to third parties.

CNIL compliance. Under CNIL délibération no. 2020-091, an analytics tool is exempt from the consent requirement when all of the following conditions are met:

  • No cookies or persistent identifiers are deposited on the visitor’s device
  • The visitor’s IP address is partially anonymised before storage (last two bytes removed)
  • Data is used solely for audience measurement, not for profiling, advertising, or cross-site tracking
  • The analytics service is operated by the site maintainer, not a third party
  • Use is disclosed in this privacy notice

This configuration meets all five conditions. No consent banner is therefore required.

What is collected per page view:

  • The URL of the page visited
  • The referring website host (not the full URL)
  • Device type, operating system, and browser (major versions only)
  • Country and city of origin, derived from a partially anonymised IP address

What is not collected:

  • Your IP address in full: the last two bytes are removed before any storage. The retained portion is used for country and city-level geolocation only.
  • Postal code or street-level location
  • Screen resolution or device model
  • Any identifier that persists across sessions or visits

Data is retained for 180 days and then deleted automatically. It is used solely for understanding how the resource is used and is never shared with third parties or used for profiling.
