ECoC — European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity

Overview

The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is a voluntary framework for research conduct published by ALLEA (All European Academies) covering all scientific and scholarly disciplines. First published in 2011, it has been revised twice, with the current edition published in June 2023. The European Commission formally recognises the ECoC as the primary standard for research integrity across all Horizon-funded projects, and it increasingly serves as the basis for national and institutional codes of conduct, funder guidelines, and discipline-specific training initiatives. The 2023 revision explicitly addressed open science practices, updated data management guidance in line with GDPR, and placed greater responsibility on research institutions for fostering an integrity-supportive research culture rather than treating integrity as a matter of individual conduct alone.
