Overview
arXiv is an open-access preprint repository established in 1991 at Los Alamos National Laboratory and subsequently moved to Cornell University in 2001. It covers physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics, electrical engineering, and economics, and hosted nearly 3 million articles as of 2025. The quantitative biology section includes a Neurons and Cognition subcategory (q-bio.NC) covering theoretical and computational neuroscience, widely used by researchers in that field alongside bioRxiv. In March 2026, arXiv announced it would become an independent nonprofit organisation on 1 July 2026, separating from Cornell to diversify funding and accelerate technical development.
Submission and Moderation
Submissions are moderated by volunteer subject-matter experts who check for scientific relevance and appropriate scope, but manuscripts are not peer reviewed. Articles are typically posted within one to two business days, with each submission and revision receiving a persistent arXiv identifier and, since 2022, a DOI. arXiv receives approximately 24,000 new submissions per month as of 2025.
Open Science Role
All arXiv content is freely accessible without registration or cost. Authors choose a licence at submission from options including CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC-SA, and CC0. arXiv integrates ORCID for author attribution and assigns DOIs via DataCite.
