medRxiv
Overview
medRxiv is a free and not-for-profit preprint server for clinical medicine, epidemiology, and public health, launched in June 2019 as a collaboration between Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), Yale University, and BMJ. It extends the bioRxiv model to the clinical and health sciences, enabling researchers to share clinical manuscripts publicly before or alongside peer review. All submissions receive a DOI for persistent citation and preserve a full version history. medRxiv operates under the same infrastructure as bioRxiv but applies additional screening appropriate for clinical research, including checks for content that could be misinterpreted as clinical guidance.
Scope and Screening
medRxiv covers clinical medicine, epidemiology, health informatics, public health, and health policy. Given the potential for clinical preprints to influence health decisions, submissions carry a prominent disclaimer that the work has not been peer reviewed. Additional screening checks for content presenting premature clinical recommendations. Authors can submit directly to affiliated journals from the medRxiv platform.
Open Science Role
medRxiv is a Plan S compliant open access deposit route under cOAlition S’s Rights Retention Strategy. It integrates ORCID for author attribution. Preprint DOIs are assigned by DataCite.
