ESFRI — European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures
Overview
ESFRI is the strategic advisory body that coordinates European policy on research infrastructures. Established in 2002 by the EU Competitiveness Council, it brings together senior science-policy delegates from EU member states, associated countries, and the European Commission to develop a common strategy for pan-European research infrastructure. Its primary output is the ESFRI Roadmap, published periodically since 2006 (with updates in 2008, 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2021), which identifies priority research infrastructures for implementation over a ten to twenty year horizon. Infrastructures on the Roadmap progress through two statuses: ESFRI Projects (in preparation or construction) and ESFRI Landmarks (operational or with a confirmed timetable). ESFRI also developed the ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) legal framework, which provides a dedicated governance structure for cross-border research infrastructure operation and is the formal basis for ELIXIR, BBMRI-ERIC, EATRIS, ECRIN, and Euro-BioImaging.
