DDBJ — DNA Data Bank of Japan
Overview
The DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ) is Japan’s member of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), synchronising daily with EMBL-EBI’s ENA and NCBI’s GenBank to form the global open nucleotide sequence archive. Operated by the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) since 1987, DDBJ provides open access to nucleotide sequences, annotated genome assemblies, and raw sequencing reads via its Sequence Read Archive (DRA). It also operates the Japanese Genotype-phenotype Archive (JGA), Japan’s controlled-access repository for sensitive human genomic and phenotypic data, equivalent in function to the European EGA. JGA is co-managed with the National Bioscience Database Center (NBDC) of the Japan Science and Technology Agency, which reviews data submission and usage requests and sets the policy framework for human-derived data sharing in Japan. DDBJ is the primary point of deposit for genomic data generated by Japanese neuroscience research programmes including Brain-MINDS.
