AIBL — Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle Study of Ageing

Overview

AIBL is a longitudinal Australian cohort study of brain ageing and Alzheimer’s disease. It tracks MRI, amyloid PET, cognitive, biofluid, and lifestyle measures in participants ranging from cognitively normal older adults to those with Alzheimer’s dementia. Commenced in 2006 and funded by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, it was designed to run in parallel with the US Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. It uses matched MRI and PET acquisition protocols so the two cohorts can be combined or cross-validated. Core neuroimaging and clinical data are distributed through the same infrastructure ADNI uses, while the fuller dataset requires a separate application directly to CSIRO.

  • Reassessment interval: roughly every 18 months

Access

  • Neuroimaging, including MRI and amyloid PET tracers such as PiB, AV45, and flutemetamol, and selected clinical data are available through the LONI Image and Data Archive.
  • A combined application process is available for researchers who want access to both AIBL and ADNI together.
  • The extended dataset, including full clinical history, genotyping, methylation, and wearable actigraphy data, requires a direct application to CSIRO.
