Inserm Open Science

Overview

Inserm is the French national biomedical research institute. Its open science policy aligns with Ouvrir la Science and is operationalised by the Département de la Science Ouverte (DSO), created in July 2023.

Key Policy Commitments

  • Open access to publications is mandatory via HAL deposit for all publications from 2020. The HAL-Inserm institutional portal (https://hal.inserm.fr) has been active since 2006, and approximately 81% of Inserm publications are open access according to the internal barometer.
  • FAIR research data: an institutional partition on Recherche Data Gouv was opened in March 2023. DMP templates are available via OPIDoR, and the guiding principle is “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”.
  • Open source software deposit in Software Heritage and Zenodo is encouraged.
  • Research evaluation reform: Inserm is a DORA signatory since 2018 and co-chairs the French CoARA chapter since 2024.
