Overview

Recherche Data Gouv is the French national multidisciplinary research data repository, launched in 2021 by the ministry responsible for higher education and research within the data.gouv.fr ecosystem. It is the primary recommended deposit destination for research data from French publicly funded projects, fulfilling the data deposit mandates of ANR Open Science Policy, CNRS Open Science, Inserm Open Science, and Ouvrir la Science.

Repository Features

The repository runs on the open-source Dataverse software developed at Harvard. Every deposited dataset receives a persistent DOI. Metadata is structured and FAIR-compliant, based on DCAT / DCAT-AP (EU profile) and Dublin Core. Datasets can be updated with new versions while preserving access to previous versions, deposited with an embargo period, or set to require access request approval for sensitive but non-health research data. Open licences include CC0, CC-BY, and the Etalab Licence Ouverte.

Disciplinary Nodes

Recherche Data Gouv operates through disciplinary data nodes (entrepôts disciplinaires) providing domain-specific metadata schemas and workflows. Progedo covers social sciences and humanities data. Nakala (Huma-Num) hosts humanities and cultural heritage collections. SEANOE covers ocean sciences data (Ifremer). Didomena covers education sciences. The life sciences node, coordinated by IFB (ELIXIR-FR), provides bioinformatics-specific guidance and FAIR-Checker integration. The disciplinary nodes are aggregated into the Recherche Data Gouv catalogue for unified discoverability and EOSC harvesting.

OPIDoR Integration

Recherche Data Gouv is tightly integrated with OPIDoR: DMP OPIDoR links directly to Recherche Data Gouv as the recommended deposit destination for French research data; Cat OPIDoR catalogues Recherche Data Gouv among French RDM services; JurisDoR provides legal guidance for deposits under GDPR and French law.

Planned development

Ouvrir la Science, the national open science policy, confirms Recherche Data Gouv as the shared sovereign infrastructure for French research data. Its action plan for 2026 to 2029 sets three lines of development.

  • The network of competence centres, which gives researchers local and discipline-specific help with deposit, continues to expand.
  • A national catalogue is to list all accessible French research data, held either in the national repository or in a trusted disciplinary repository, so that both can be searched from one place.
  • Deposit is to be assisted by AI that drafts the deposit form from a project’s data management plan, articles, and README files, with further tools aligning metadata to controlled vocabularies and adding semantic search to the catalogue.

European Discoverability

Metadata is harvested by EOSC via DCAT-AP, making French research datasets discoverable across European research infrastructure. OpenAIRE harvests Recherche Data Gouv metadata for EU open science monitoring. Deposits with DOIs are indexed in DataCite, enabling citation tracking.
